'If everyone were rational you wouldn't need any marketing'

Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman of Ogilvy Group, was one of three great speakers at a University of Cambridge talk - 'The Flawed Dominance of Economics' last week, which The Behavioural Architects sponsored.

Talking of how behavioural economics and psychology can explain actual behaviour often far better than many economic models, he also observed that if everyone were completely rational, we wouldn't need any marketing!

The event, held at King's College, Cambridge, and organised by the Cambridge University Science and Policy Exchange, questioned how the social sciences (apart from economics) could play a more substantive role in government decision-making.

The two other headline speakers, Paul Wiles, Former Chief Government Social Scientist and Stewart Wallis, Executive Director of the New Economics Foundation, looked at

- the scope and huge need for social science in government
- the dominance of the natural and physical sciences and economics in government
- the possible flaws of Economics as we know it

You can watch each of the reasoned and fascinating talks here: Rory Sutherland, Paul Wiles and Stewart Wallis. More about the event here.
