The Challenge

To combat Sydney's 'urban heat island' effect and achieve the goal of planting one million trees, we needed to encourage residents to plant trees on private property. In 2018, very few trees were being registered when planted.

The Insight

Research revealed people associated "tree" with large public trees, triggering negative private property associations. We found people wanted "solutions" – like shade, privacy, fruit, or wildlife – not just "trees".

Our Solution

We advised de-emphasising the word "tree," instead framing benefits as solutions to boost motivation. We also recommended chunking the tree-planting journey to simplify action. The "Everyone Plant One" campaign ran from October 2021 to March 2022.

The Impact

Over 1,065,682 trees were registered by 2023. Post-campaign, tree registrations significantly increased. Our work contributed to reduced urban heat and positive environmental change, winning multiple awards, including the MRS 2022 Grand Prix for Social Impact and the Best Paper by a Practitioner at The International Social Marketing Conference in 2025. Incidence of tree removal also decreased from 20% in 2020 to 13% in 2024.
